Police report that a Muscle Shoals Middle School Administrator and a Muscle Shoals Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) were made aware of a handgun being brought to school by a student.
The MSPD SRO and school administrator quickly located the student and took an unloaded handgun from a bag of candy in the student’s possession.
The SRO detained the student in question, who was promptly turned over to Colbert County Juvenile Authorities with the appropriate charges pending.
Due to the actions of the MSPD SRO and school administrative staff, the possibility of a threat or emergency was quickly addressed and brought to a conclusion. However, the mere possession of a firearm by a minor on school grounds is a violation of Federal and Alabama State Laws. This investigation has led the Muscle Shoals Police Department to bring charges against a parent/guardian(s) due to having knowledge the juvenile child was in possession of a firearm.
