The Tennessee Valley Authority announces the successful start-up of the first of three new combustion turbine generators at Colbert Combustion Turbine Plant in Barton.
When complete, the units can produce about 750 MW of power and will help TVA meet demand during peak periods. The new units run on natural gas and replace the coal-powered generators which were demolished in 2021.
The Colbert Steam Plant as it’s commonly called was built in 1955 to replace Wilson Steam Plant, a World War I era coal-burner on the Muscle Shoals Reservation.
